What are we working on?
READING:
**Every week, I send home a packet of resources in yellow folders to USE AS NEEDED FOR YOUR CHILD!!! It will include the skills sheet with various worksheets that reteach what's being taught in class. There will also be "TAKE HOME" letters & activities sent home throughout the lessons to help you better guide your child. (Return the COMPLETED homework packet on FRIDAY for a PAWS ticket!!)
READING TESTS will be given weekly. These cannot be "studied" for because they are new stories (aka: "cold reads") that the students have never seen before. **We are highlighting the text evidence (answers in the story), too. Please practice this skill at home on your homework stories... if no highlighter can be found, simply underline.

Vocab & Spelling = FRIDAY!
If tests will be given on another day, I will... write a note on the homework packet coversheet, send out announcement on FEM app, and/or write on my weekly newsletter!

Is your child having trouble?? Here are some suggestions:
**Any “cut and work” sheets in the homework packet are for your child to practice blending sounds & reading whole words. They can also be used to create sentences and complete thoughts.
1) Spelling Test: Words will be called out and given in a sentence. I also sound each word out, sound-by-sound. The student will have to correctly write each of them in nice handwriting. I also give a dictation sentence from our weekly reader book... it will have words and sounds we've learned.
***You can use this FREE website to practice: https://www.spellingcity.com/users/lgamato
***Use different strategies (sidewalk chalk, sky write, shaving cream, markers, etc.)
***Download the PHONICS GENIUS app and practice the word family that focuses on our weekly skill.
***Practice sounding out and blending words: http://www.readingbear.org/
2) Vocab Test: READ ALOUD- the kids need to recognize the actual vocab word by sight... and be able to match to the definition. We also fill in the blanks.
***You can use this FREE website to practice: https://quizlet.com/join/UGu9N787n
***Make notecards with terms and definitions ... play a matching game
***Let your child make up motions to remember each word (use hands, arms, bodies, etc.)
***Create sentences with each vocabulary word to apply context clues.
3) Reading Comprehension: Students listen to me read the story aloud [read aloud until January], and then the student will read it independently to answer the questions (and highlight the text evidence with #s to identify question #) .
***Read stories with your child and ask them questions about the characters, pictures, setting, problem,
solution, etc. Reading passages available on www.ReadWorks.org. *Also encourage them to go back
and find "text evidence." The answers can be found in the story and pictures. This is a vital skill for
students these days because standardized tests are more about the WHY (prove your answer) than
just WHAT the answer is.

MATH: We are using Zearn digital lessons this year along with Eureka Math small group lessons. The goal is to complete 4 digital lessons weekly, unless otherwise noted by teacher. (There is a participation grade for digital work and completed notebooks.)
